Bob Dylan's gig at Tokyo's Budokan stadium in 1978 caused somewhat of an uproar for Dylan fans. It was in effect a showcase of the reworking of his most popular 22 songs, to be released shortly afterwards as an album. But for many purist fans, that had followed Dylan from his folk roots, this was a controversial direction to have taken.

The live album received mixed reviews worldwide and is still a hot topic among Dylan fan forum members, but nevertheless, it was Dylan's performance at Budokan, along with other supergroups including The Beatles, Kiss and later Pearl Jam, that has cemented its reputation as one of the world's most famous venues.

Despite a huge pop culture in Tokyo, Japanese rock fans have been responsible for phenomenal record sales of some of the world's biggest groups, and despite the fact that Dylan dressed for his Budokan appearance in a white spandex jumpsuit, a la Elvis, it didn't seem to put fans off for long, as his tours are still selling out even today. |
